Winemaking Style
The vineyards are situated on volcanic soils rich in granite and basalt, known locally as Macbanseok, which provide excellent drainage and impart a distinct mineral complexity to the wines. The winery’s name, "264" is derived from Korean’s famous poet, Yi Yuksa’s birthplace in Dosan-myeon, Andong. His literary works, particularly his poem Cheongpodo, which romanticizes the beauty and resilience of green grapes, serve as both inspiration and ethos for the winery. This connection is further emphasized by naming its flagship wines after the poet’s works: The Vertex, The Wild Plain, and Zenith.
264 Chungpodo Winery began as a collaborative effort with local farmers to cultivate the Chungsoo grape (Vitis spp.), and centers on preserving the grape’s natural characteristics through minimal intervention, and emphasizing stainless steel fermentation to retain freshness and terroir expression. With a 2-stage fermentation process, where whole clusters of Chungsoo grapes are crushed and fermented with skins for 10 days in stainless steel tanks to extract color and tannins. The must is then transferred to stainless steel tanks for an additional 35 days of fermentation at controlled temperatures (20°C), followed by 6 months of aging. The absence of malolactic fermentation and oak aging ensures that the wines retain their vibrant acidity and pure fruit character.
